We Need to Heal This Now

Following the destructive wildfires in Southeast Australia in the summer of 2019-2020, Yuin and Thunghutti knowledge-holder Adrian Webster reflects on the health of Country at a significant place where the edge of land culturally burned in 2018, met the heat of the wildfires 18 months later.

“We’re up here where all the wildfires come through and looking now, since all this rain’s come, we’re starting to see all these plants popping up. And because of the way that fire reacted through here, it was at the wrong time. It burnt all the wrong fuel and so this outcome we’ve got is wrong. All the seeds that got activated in the soil through this fire, most of them aren’t meant to be here…Because that wrong fire came through, it’s breaking away our diversity.”
