🔥Aiming to restore ecological balance, improve grazing land, and build stronger connections between people and the Country by revitalising cultural burning.

🙌🏽This approach represents a significant shift from conventional land management practices, emphasising harmony with the land and using fire as a tool for regeneration.

Last month our SEQ team collaboratively hosted an on country workshop with local Yuwi mob, with support from Greening Australia . Bringing together Yuwi Rangers, Woorabinda Rangers and Barada Barna Rangers, they explored the unique land management systems of the Yuwi people. A highlight for everyone involved included learning about new plant species and adapting our knowledge to new environments. Witnessing the strong partnership between National Parks and the Yuwi Rangers was a key success emerging from the workshop, together everyone working towards ways to manage and preserve their land and culture 🔥

Matthew Whitelock, Firesticks Associate Fire Practitioner, said: “Getting everyone to learn and be happy about reading country, and not just putting fire down for the sake of it, was truly rewarding. Everyone stayed engaged and learned a lot about the identity of the country and the path to restore it.”

🔥We Honour a Historic-Cultural Burn at Beemunnel Reserve Aboriginal Place🔥

🌟A few months ago, we witnessed a significant event as Cultural Fire was reintroduced on Wayilwan Country in Warren, NSW, for the first time in over 100 years!

🫶🏾This transformative two-day burn, led by Peter Townsend, Firesticks Lead Fire Practitioner, marked a significant cultural revival. Aboriginal Elders, some born and raised on the reserve, gathered to witness this traditional practice again.

🌿 This event held a deep personal significance for the community and Peter, a proud Wiradjuri, Wayilwan, and Gamilaraay man. It was a powerful connection to the legacy of ancestors who lived on the Reserve in the 1950s and 1960s.

🙌🏽Thanks to the Biodiversity Conservation Trust of NSW and Warren Macquarie Local Aboriginal Land Council for their invaluable support.
