Communities

Like our approach to managing various Country types, we work in different ways to support communities. There is no one single approach. We provide learning tools for communities so they can lead and determine the best way forward to manage and heal their own Country.

Southeast QLD

Firesticks has been working with communities in the Southeast Queensland region over the last five years led by recently recognised Lead Fire Practitioner Leeton Lee. The Firesticks Southeast Queensland Mentoring Program covers the largest region in our network stretching from Mackay to Toomulla. Much of our work is focused on Wakka Wakka Country in the Bunya Mountains with our key partner in the region, Bunya Mountains Aboriginal Corporation (BPAC). So far, this program has supported 22 Mentoring Program participants to develop knowledge and revitalise Cultural Fire management in the region. In 2023 we ran 26 Cultural Fire workshops including a men’s cultural knowledge camp and events on K’gari.

In partnership with BPAC and Wakka Wakka Traditional Owners, Firesticks has recently purchased a property on Upper Barker Creek. Together, we’ll work to restore the Country and stage a handover process back to the Wakka Wakka people.

“Throughout 2023 we have been fortunate to have many workshops and learning opportunities for the South East QLD region. This has increased exposure to the preparation work, assessments and Fire on Country, and I believe this is in part a great contributor to the excelled learning of Practitioners.”
