Communities

Like our approach to managing various Country types, we work in different ways to support communities. There is no one single approach. We provide learning tools for communities so they can lead and determine the best way forward to manage and heal their own Country.

Firesticks has invested in building partnerships in the Greater Sydney region, across Dharawal, Dharug, and Gundungurra nations. As a built-up, urban environment, Greater Sydney offers a lot of opportunity for camp and infrastructure burns which are more difficult to practice in rural areas.

In 2024, we’ll be launching our first Mentoring Program in the region, which has already received over 60 applications. Lead Fire Practitioners will also be assisting with the delivery of burn workshops outside the mentoring program, across a range of Country types. Despite the land clearing and housing development in the area, these remnant vegetated areas will provide community with the opportunity to revive and practice their own cultural land management.

“This is a good opportunity for Firesticks to mentor Associates in Cultural Burning around urban areas and how our traditional land management techniques with fire can be used for asset protection effectively in a metro environment.”
